La Cañada Flintridge is located 13 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. The 8.6 square mile city is bordered by the Los Angeles National Forest and the cities of Glendale and Pasadena. The surrounding hills and mountains provide an aesthetic viewscape that is fundamental to the character of the city. The city of La Cañada Flintridge has a population of 20,769 people and is ranked 21st among California cities in per-capita income. La Cañada Flintridge is essentially fully developed. The General Plan states as a goal to "maintain and enhance the City's character as a low-density, wooded, single family residential land hillside community." Another of the City's goals is to "encourage the development of an attractive and balanced commercial base for the community" without unnecessarily impacting the residential character of the city.
